What's in a name?

Dear Spencer,

Recently, your dear aunt Stacy purchased your very first personalized sleeping gown. When it finally arrived after much anticipation, we marveled at how precious it was with its little airplane design and the sweetest red letters below that delicately spelled out your chosen name. Finding precious things to monogram, well that was easy. However, the journey that led us to your name was far from it...this is that story.

At the start of Name Game 2010, we consulted with friends, perused the pages of an enormous stack of baby books and read an endless amount of movie credits, all in hopes of finding the perfect name. First, we contemplated Beck, in honor of one of our favorite musicians, but quickly decided the nickname "Becky" would be dreadful. Then we moved on to names like Huck, Jude and Finley, but thought none of those fit the image we had for you. Your father even jokingly (we hope) wanted to name you Holland Oats – we’re going to measure our level of success as parents as to whether or not you actually get that reference. Essentially, we tried on name after name, but nothing seemed good enough for our little guy.

After months of debate we finally decided to take the advice of your aunt Stacy. We don’t even know how many times she suggested the name to us. She desperately wanted it to be your cousin Molly’s name, but never could get the support to back her up on that one. So her dream of a daughter named Spencer Larkin turned into Molly Larkin and thus began her campaign of getting a Spencer in our little family, somehow.

Where did she get the name? Well, you see, Spencer is the name of one of Nay’s favorite cousins who was named after the famous actor Spencer Tracy. Larkin is another family name, taken from your great-great grandfather, William Larkin “Jack” Cleaveland. Since Stacy already used Larkin in Molly’s name, we decided to give you the same middle name as your father, Reid. And that's how you got your name, Spencer Reid. You might not have had a completed room, or even a crib, but at least you had a name. A perfect combination of both of your families, united as one.

This morning I was looking over your collection of tiny clothes and that adorable little sleeping gown caught my eye. As those perfect little red letters stared back at me, I couldn't help to think to myself smugly, “I sure am glad Stacy never got her way with Molly.”
It may have taken us a while to get here, but it’s only made us more confident in the decision. Now we just have to pray that you like it too … and if you don’t, we’re blaming aunt Stacy.

Love,
Mom
