And don't call me Shirley.

Dear Spencer,

Last weekend our friends Heather, Jason, Brett, and Andrea came to our house for a visit. We grilled out hot dogs and hamburgers and ate one of my very ugly cake creations. It was nice to get to spend some time with good friends! Heather & Jason brought along the always precious and sweet Lydia. We just loved having a little one around! She is now 14 months old and very busy! It was nice to have her toddling around our living room, pointing out every single thing we have not yet baby-proofed. We now know the drawers under our television are great for slamming little fingers, we have entirely too many knick-knacks laying around and Wii remotes are the ultimate baby toy. This trial run was a major eye-opener, to say the least.

In other news, we have almost completely finished your baby room! We're just waiting for the rug to arrive, and we still have a few knobs to add to your furniture. But other than that, we're pretty well stocked and organized. Daddy & Papa say that you have more clothes than any of us do. They're probably right.

It definitely helps me to sleep better at night knowing that if you decide to sneak up on us a little early, we are prepared. Which is a good thing, considering we're now 30 weeks into this journey! How about a developmental update?

Your baby's about 15.7 inches long now, and he weighs almost 3 pounds (like a head of cabbage). A pint and a half of amniotic fluid surrounds him, but that volume will decrease as he gets bigger and takes up more room in your uterus. His eyesight continues to develop, though it's not very keen; even after he's born, he'll keep his eyes closed for a good part of the day. When he does open them, he'll respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision — which means he can only make out objects a few inches from his face. (Normal adult vision is 20/20.)

Three pounds, eh? I fully intend to use this as my excuse at my next weigh-in, which happens to be this Friday. I mean, obviously, if you now weigh three whole pounds, I should weigh at least three more than last time, right? Surely any potential weight gain has nothing to do with the half-gallon of ice cream or the two plates of Japanese rice Daddy and I have indulged in over the past week. Surely not.

Love,
Mommy
