It may be small, but it's ours.
Dear Spencer,
Recently Daddy and I have been talking about plans. And by plans, I mean, home plans.
For years, our plan was to live in our modest home on Laurel Lane for the next six or so years. We planned to pay down our debt, continue saving for the future, and just kind of live simply until you go off to elementary school (see: free childcare) in a few years. Then we figured we would use all the extra money we would have to invest in a bigger home, maybe a better car, and all the other "extra" things that life can bring.
Then one day we started noticing all the things we wanted. A porch, a better backyard, a two-car driveway, a larger master bath, etc., etc., so on and so forth. The more we talked about the things we wanted, the more we wanted them and the more we wanted them immediately. It didn't take long before our plan to wait a few years turned into - MUST HAVE NEW HOME NOW!
So we put a for sale sign in our front yard.
We painted our bathroom, planted some flowers, touched up all the knicks and scratches, bought new rugs, hired a lawn man - - you know, got it "ready to sell".
And then the unthinkable happened - - we fell in love with our home all over again.
Turns out, we just needed to give it some attention in order to remember why we wanted to move here in the first place. It was like the rebirth of a love affair. We started to appreciate the simplicity and we started to embrace all the charm. When we looked out in our backyard we saw the fun times we had spent with you, pushing you in your swing - rather than the lack of a covered porch. When we sat in our living room, we thought about the countless times we'd rocked you to sleep in there, rather than wishing that it was bigger.
We also realized that we kind of liked our humble lifestyle.
In today's society, we're so obsessed with more, more, more that we often miss out on all the wonderful things we already have - because we're too busy dreaming about what's next to come. So with that in mind, Daddy and I decided that we didn't want to be "more" people, we wanted to be "content" people.
So tonight, after dinner, Daddy removed the for sale sign from in front of our home.
I'm sure one day we'll probably want "more" again, but for now, we're happy just having "this".
Love,
Mommy
This made me tear up, and it's so true. I love this SWV! <3
